Secondary Infection

The skin of individuals with atopic eczema behaves as if it was immune suppressed. This means that it can be more readily infected by bacteria, viruses and fungi.

• Staphylococcus aureus infection of the skin is very common and frequently leads to small erosions, fissures, and yellow crusting
• Herpes simplex virus spreads much more easily in the skin affected by eczema
• Molluscum contagiosum often spreads more easily when there is eczema
• Viral warts are also more common
• There is also an increased risk of fungal infections such as athlete's foot
